WAR IS CHANGING. ARE WE? By Lt Gen P R Shankar (R)

I got some great feedback on my earlier article in which I highlighted the concept of Multi Domain Operations ( https://palepurshankar.blogspot.com/2019/10/era-of-disruption-in-military-affairs.html )   and the requirement of Indian strategic thinking to align with this emerging thought process. The feedback suggested that it was a great futuristic concept.   Sorry folks. It is not a futuristic concept I was outlining. It is current, clear and happening now. It further led me to ask myself a question. War is changing. Are we? The short hasty answer would be – No. However, the issue needs deeper thinking and reflection. Let me attempt it. Changing Face of War In Jul 19, two oil tankers were sunk in the Gulf of Oman through use of mines. In Sep 19, two coordinated air strikes were carried out on oil facilities deep in Saudi Arabia by UAVs. Study them an...

Era of Disruption in Military Affairs: Need for Multi Domain Operations By Lt Gen P R Shankar (R)

Original Article @ bharatshakti.in Preamble Generat Bipin Rawat recently stated “  T he next war will be fought with indigenous weapons and we will win it. ” He qualified it by saying  “ I f we are looking at the contours of future warfare, it may not necessarily be contact warfare. So, there is a realm of non-contact warfare. We need to start looking at development of cyberspace, space, laser, electronic warfare and robotics... and, along with that Artificial Intelligence [AI], And  if we do not start thinking on it now, it will be too late ".  I will take it a step further. Conventional war as we know it is passé.  The next generation war is upon . We are already fighting it. Unfortunately we have not understood  it in its full dimension or conceptualized it. In such conditions indigenisation is far off and winning it even father. The first step in this "back to the future" scenario is to understand the concept and take ...

RE-IMAGINING KASHMIR 2030 BY LT GEN P R SHANKAR (R)

I am Azadi Khan.  It is 2030. A lot has changed in the past decade. Ladakh has made great progress. Jammu has prospered. Kashmir has regressed. It has now gone through eight decades of suffering. Where are we going?  I wonder. When Article 370 was abrogated all established leaders never got back into the mainstream. The militant leadership with Pakistani links were ruthlessly pursued by law. There was a huge vacuum. Masses could not be mobilized due to lack of leadership. A restive Kashmir was in an uneasy state of calm. I was studying in Bengaluru at that time. I was parachuted into a leadership role to lead the Intifada. I was made the leader of the intifada, I decided that it should be nonviolent and be based on Gandhiji’s principles of satyagraha. We will then achieve Azadi at all costs. I convinced our backers in Pakistan that they should help me in my nonviolent Intifada.  Initially they did so. However, they soon formed new radical groups once the FATF yok...
