Panel Discussion : The Economic Times Aerospace and Defence Summit 2021

The 2^nd edition of ‘The Economic Times Aerospace and Defence Summit 2021(ET ADS 2021) took place on 16^th November 2021. The Summit 2021 brought together industry experts on one platform to deliberate on the growth opportunities while dealing successfully with the challenges. It was my honour that I took part in the Summit as a guest speaker in a panel which covered panoramic aspects of important policies, plans and challenges at national level. the discussion was interesting and many important issues came up. The recording of the discussion is placed above.

A request was put forth to me to put it on the net for a wider audience to see it at their leisure. A view from Australia was - "Sir fantastic session and some deep insights on Atmanirbharta SWOT analysis. Realistically got the nail on the head that India needs to decide what's to outsource globally and what's best to manufacture domestically. Even F35 has components from over 40 countries allied to US with 400gms per aircraft or rare earth coming from China!! ‘Sir, will China invade us?’ ‘We hear China has increased activities on the border’. Chinese consolidation activities on the LAC have prompted such reactions and fears. Lot of such inquiries from citizens within and outside India. Why? AGNIPATH : AN INSIDERS VIEW FROM OUTSIDE

As per reports the government is set to finalise the ‘Agnipath’ nee ‘Tour of Duty’ recruitment scheme, under which youth can enlist in the Army for three /five years and be known as ‘Agnivirs’. It is being envisaged that 25% of them would serve for three years and 25% for five years, the remaining 50% would serve for the full term till they reach the retirement age. This major reform is expected to significantly reduce the age profile of the Armed forces. This reform will also result in significant reduction of pensions. It will curb the ballooning salary and pension bills that are adversely impacting military modernization. Under this arrangement, after completing 3 or 5 years of service, the Army will help the soldier/officer to be recruited in other services. The soldiers would be given a pay-out along with priority in recruitment to certain government jobs, including the central armed police forces. POLITICAL CRUMBLING OF THE LAST BASTION by LT GEN P R SHANKAR (RETD)

The politicization of the last bastion of India is well and truly underway. The beeline of Armed Forces officers in joining a political party is just the latest milestone in this journey. More will follow. That will be to the detriment of national security, in the short run. Very definitely. In the long run. It is debatable since the nation is into uncharted oceans. At the outset I must state, that this is an apolitical analysis of a symptom for which I do not have answers. There is a view that unless Service Officers join the political platform, there will be no redressal of the imbalances our Services and nation face. That is agreed to.
